Maddie Alexander, Dana Buzzee, Wren Morris
Anna Leonowens Gallery, July 23rd-27th, 2019
Documentation by : Wren Morris + Brody Weaver
Flagging Velvet brings together artists Maddie Alexander, Dana Buzzee, and Wren Morris. Collectively, the works that build Flagging Velvet offer documents of queer sexualities and desires which reclaim context and space from a conventional hetero gaze. Through a multidisciplinary approach Alexander, Buzzee, and Morris create community-based pornographies that seek to honour historical leather dyke culture, while contributing to its contemporary current, offering audiences a view of self-determined representation of queer + trans sex and empowered BDSM play.
Queer liberation has always been linked to the policing of our bodies and sexuality in efforts to make our existence illegal. In this way, it is impossible to detach conversations around sex or sexuality from queer liberation. Access to queer and trans sexual education can quite literally be a lifesaving measure for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth. These conversations are a critical action in healing the long history of violence against our community, and opening space to consider the harmful ideals compuslorary cis heterocentrism has instilled within us.
Alexander, Buzzee, and Morris’ work within Flagging Velvet are bond to a rich political history of queer sexual liberation. The Anna, from July 23rd - July 27th (2019), is a gallery transformed to hold sex-positive, active, informed, consenting, reclaiming, and empowered pornographies that celebrate the queer deviant perverts. By presenting art focused on community-based and first-hand narratives around queer + trans sexuality, Flagging Velvet finds itself honouring the stories of our lived experiences and those of the generations that fucked before us.
